About ovulation

Ovulation is an important element in the female cycle –  we have already explained the cycle and the hormones involved.  It is worthwhile, however, to take a closer look at ovulation, because especially the timing of ovulation plays a big role in family planning. For example, if you know when exactly your ovulation is taking place, you can increase the likelihood of getting pregnant.

What exactly happens:

The hormone constellation in your body has caused an egg to mature in an ovarian follicle in the ovary. When the time comes, the follicle bursts and releases the egg into the fallopian tube – where it makes its way towards the uterus.

When exactly it happens:

Well, that’s not that easy: in theory (ie at a very regular cycle of 28 days), ovulation occurs statistically on the 14th day. In reality, however, this applies to well below 20% of women. Often the cycle length is between 28 and 35 days, but there exist lengths between 21 and 40 days as well. In the course of a (women’s) life, the cycle length changes. Diseases, mental processes, travel – all of which can affect the cycle length. To make a long story short:  A purely calendrical calculation of the cycle length and the ovulation timing can provide at most a rough orientation – but takes no account of the individual circumstances and living conditions. Unfortunately, the perfect cycle calculator does not exist.

Ovulation and fertility

The ovum is shorter timed than many think: only about 48 hours after it has burst from the ovarian follicle, it can be fertilized by a sperm. Nature has come up with something clever to extend the period: sperm can survive up to five days in the female body – in theory, sex five days before ovulation is enough to catch the egg’s fertilization window. Fertilization can therefore be planned before ovulation – ideally, you paint this time window directly in your fertility calendar.

So: what to do to know the exact time window?

At trackle we are convinced that the symptothermal method is the safest and most reliable way to determine the time of ovulation. The calendar, the body observation, the prognoses based on the data of the old cycles: all this gives orientation. But the only thing that is really certain is the evaluation of body symptoms and the temperature profile of core body temperature – day after day.
